Six months of Highveld site walks confirmed the solar resource, grid adjacency, and landowner readiness before MOU. The site's proximity to the Samancor smelter corridor made it a natural fit for wheeled C&I off-take — but that only became clear after walking the land.

Karen Metcalf founded AEEG to prove that utility-scale solar could be built by and for the communities who live on the land. With a pipeline approaching 1 GW and the Middelburg flagship online in 2026, the model is working — and the benefits are flowing back to the Highveld families who made it possible.
Construction has begun on AEEG's 49 MW Middelburg Solar Farm — the company's first utility-scale wheeling project. Located in Mpumalanga's industrial corridor near the Samancor smelter, the project will deliver clean energy at a fraction of Eskom tariff to a major C&I off-taker.
Load-shedding, rising Eskom tariffs, and EU CBAM pressure are pushing South Africa's mining sector toward wheeled solar PPAs. For BEE Level 1 developers like AEEG, the regulatory alignment creates a structural advantage that multinational competitors can't easily replicate.
